Pope Accuses Russia Of Imperialism And Calls On It To Lay Down Its Arms

The pontiff said the Vatican's position on the war would now be "clearer."

Pope Leo XIV has accused Russia of aggression against Ukraine, which is accompanied by crimes against humanity.

This is according to the pontiff's interview with Peruvian publication Semanario Expresión.

The newly appointed leader of the Catholic Church condemned Russia's war against Ukraine. He called the clash "a very serious problem that affects the whole world" and "a real imperialist invasion."

"From my point of view, this (war - ed.) is a real imperialist invasion, where Russia wants to conquer territory for reasons of strength and its own superiority because of its strategic location and because of the great value that Ukraine has for Russia culturally, historically and industrially. This has already been proven; crimes against humanity are being committed in Ukraine. We should pray to God for peace, but I think we should also be clearer," Leo XIV said.

He added that "even some politicians in our country do not want to recognize the horrors of this war and the evil that Russia is committing with all its actions there in Ukraine." In his view, it is "really a situation that cries out to heaven, that seeks a solution."

"And I think we all have to insist a lot on promoting peace, on laying down our arms. Today we can no longer resort to arms to solve problems. And we must look for other methods, and God grant that, at least for this time, there should be a pause in all this violence, either because of Holy Week or because so many innocent people are being killed, are being killed because of this unjust aggression," the pope said.
