Political analyst explains the reason
Vladimir Putin fears the end of the war due to the domestic political situation in Russia, where about a third of the population seeks the complete destruction of Ukraine.
This opinion was expressed by political analyst Vadym Denysenko on Radio NV.
According to him, 30-35 percent of Russian "ultra-patriots" want the war to continue until Ukraine is completely destroyed. Some of them form the core and support base of Putin’s electorate, while others are actually anti-Putin.
"The end of the war in the spring of 2025 could lead to silent or covert resistance within the Russian Federation. And the Kremlin's political bloc, which handles internal affairs, does not understand how to transition the country back to a peaceful state or what to do with these people," the expert noted.
Due to the fear of this proactive minority, Denysenko believes, the Kremlin decided that the war must continue.
"When Putin doesn’t know what decision to make, his tendency is to postpone it indefinitely. In this case, until at least the end of the year," the political analyst suggested.
The ‘Hawks’ in Putin’s Inner Circle
Additionally, according to Vadym Denysenko, a group of ‘hawks’—strong advocates of continuing the war—has formed within Putin’s inner circle.
"These people have considerable influence over Putin and reinforce his belief that the summer counteroffensive should be extended," he noted.
The political analyst believes that among them are Rostec chief Chemezov, who would have to figure out what to do with the Russian military-industrial complex after the war ends; Putin’s aide Patrushev; Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration Kiriyenko, who oversees domestic policy; the Kovalchuk brothers, one of whom is Putin’s sparring partner in historical discussions; and Putin’s foreign policy advisor Ushakov.
"This group of five people around Putin is actively lobbying for the continuation of the war," Denysenko explained.
