The submarine of the ‘Malyutka’ type, which sank during the Great Patriotic War, has been found in the Gulf of Peter the Great in the Sea of Japan, reports the local VL.ru edition with reference to the press service of the Pacific Fleet.
The submarine was discovered by servicemen, the research ‘Iskra sailing vessel’, ‘Vice-Admiral Vorontsov’ hydrographic vessel and other fleet vessels were involved in the search operations. The type of submarine was identified by crew members of the ‘Igor Belousov’ rescue vessel.
The military assumed that the found diesel submarine is an M-49 submarine. Communication with the submarine was lost on 16 August 1941. She had a crew of 22 people on board.
M-49 is a submarine of the XII series, it was laid down in the summer of 1937 on the slipway of plant No. 112 in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod). In the beginning of 1939, the submarine was commissioned, and in November it joined the Pacific Fleet. In August 1941, the M-4 went on patrol near Vladivostok. During the operation, the submarine could have run into a Soviet defence barrage mine.
The navy press service noted that the M-49 submarine, as well as the M-63, were started to be searched for 20 years ago. Both disappeared between 10 and 17 August 1941.
Submarines of this type were named ‘Malyutka’ for their small size, which allowed them to be transported by railway without disassembly, the military noted.
In the spring of 2019, researchers found a Soviet Shch-302 ‘Okun’ submarine of the Great Patriotic War times at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland. The submarine went to the bottom after being blown up by an anti-submarine mine.
The crew of the submarine started its last mission in October 1942. The Shch-302 ‘Okun’ was heading towards the island of Moshchny accompanied by a convoy. The weather got worse, the ships took shelter in the bay, but the submarine did not notice the signals and continued on her way. In mid-October, she exploded on a mine. There were 37 people on board the submarine.
