‘Smells Like Gunpowder’: Drones Hit Plant In Samara Region, Russia

The plant manufactures explosives.

On the night of March 5, drones hit the Promsintez plant in the Samara region of Russia, which specializes in the manufacture of explosives. A fire broke out at the site.

Focus collected information about the night attack in the Samara region of the Russian Federation based on local Telegram channels.

An air raid alert was declared in the Samara region at night, around 01:00. The alarm was caused by attack drones that were moving through the region's airspace.

Soon, sounds of explosions were heard in the region. Telegram channels began to distribute videos in which explosions were heard and the work of the Russian air defense system was visible. Locals reported that they “smelled gunpowder” after the shelling.

According to the Governor of the Samara Region Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, drones struck an enterprise located in the city of Chapayevsk.

“Ukrainian drones attacked an industrial enterprise in Chapayevsk this morning,” the official noted.

He also reported that there were no casualties as a result of the drone attack. Also, according to Fedorishchev, emergency services are working at the site of the strikes — they are extinguishing the fire that arose as a result of the shelling.

At the same time, the Russian authorities have not yet announced information about the hit.

What is known about the Promsintez plant in the Samara Region

Promsintez JSC is the “successor” of the Samara Sergievsky Explosives Plant. It was founded back in 1997. The company produces various explosives — from nitrobenzene to ready-made TNT blocks, intended for open and underground mining, blasting operations in mines and shafts, etc.

Open sources report that today this enterprise is one of the main manufacturers of industrial explosives in Russia and the CIS. The enterprise also supplies its products to mining and metallurgical companies in different countries.

This is not the first time this plant has been attacked by drones. Explosions there thundered in July 2023, resulting in the deaths of Russians.
