A video of the whirlwind, which was seen by Minsk citizens in the afternoon on April 26 near Dolginovski tract, is spreading on the Web. The correspondent of the agency "Minsk-Novosti" found out whether it was a tornado.
The video of eyewitnesses was studied by experts from Belgidromet, who doubted the definition of the natural phenomenon:
- Since this afternoon weather conditions in Minsk were determined by a cold unstable air mass, implying the development of cumulus and rain clouds, there was a possibility of a sharp squally wind increase. However, the vortex on the video does not descend from the cumulus-rain cloud, but, on the contrary, rises from the ground surface, which corresponds to the criteria of a dusty vortex.
The institution noted that such a local phenomenon is a vortex air movement with a diameter of up to 5 m and a height of up to 20 m, occurring near the ground surface in the daytime as a result of solar heating. Its duration is a few minutes.
A tornado is a strong small-scale (diameter from 10 to 1500 m) vortex with a vertical axis of rotation, which is formed under cumulus-rain clouds and has a short duration of existence (up to several hours).
-Tornadoes are most often observed in the warm season, when the atmosphere is highly unstable, which is characterized by the presence of zones of active convective and thunderstorm activity. The presence of warm and moist flows in the lower part of the atmosphere and dry flows in its upper part is noted. Most often such conditions are formed during the passage of cold atmospheric fronts, - summarized the experts.
By the way, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, no incidents related to the vortex have been recorded in the capital.
