Reuters: Ukrainian Armed Forces Break Through Russia's First Line Of Defense In Belgorod Region

Ukrainian troops have advanced 3-4 km.

Ukrainian troops have broken through Russia's first line of defense in the Belgorod region, advancing 3-4 kilometers in depth. Heavy fighting continues in the area of the village of Popovka, where drones are being used for shelling.

Reuters writes about this.

According to Emil Kastehelmi, a military analyst at the Finnish company Black Bird Group, Ukrainian troops have broken through the first line of Russian defense. In addition, he adds, Ukrainian fighters have probably managed to advance to a depth of three to four kilometers.

Kastehelmi emphasizes that the presence of the Russian contingent in this area is very high. At the same time, propagandists are convincing their audience that Russia has transferred reinforcements to Belgorod from Goptarovka in the Kursk region.

However, as the Russians note, the Ukrainians retain serious offensive potential in this direction and do not abandon plans for further breakthroughs, in particular in new sections of the front.

Currently, Ukraine has not officially confirmed military actions in the Belgorod region. However, in an evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces have taken “certain steps” on Russian territory “just below the Kursk region”. He emphasized that such actions are aimed at “reducing the accumulation” of Russian troops and easing the pressure on Ukrainian troops in this area.

Chairman of the Central Intelligence Agency under the National Security and Defense Council Andriy Kovalenko, in his statement on March 18, suggested that Ukrainian forces could act in the Belgorod region to “neutralize threats” from Russian troops that could be concentrating near the border.

Reuters journalists believe that the Ukrainian operation could be an attempt to distract Russian forces that are trying to dislodge Ukrainian troops from the neighboring Kursk region.

Military observer David Sharpe believes that Ukrainian troops have discovered a weak spot in the Russian defense on the border with Belgorod and are trying to make the most of this moment to divert the enemy's resources.
