‘Ukraine Is Transferring The War To Russian Territory’
OLEKSIY HETMAN

What is the main point of the Ukrainian operation in the Belgorod region?

The Ukrainian army is launching a new successful operation and advancing deep into Russia. Russian military propagandists and Z-war correspondents are forced to admit that Ukrainian forces have captured the village of Demidovka in the Belgorod region. Moreover, the Ukrainian army is simultaneously storming the village of Popovka.

What are Ukraine's goals in the Belgorod region?

For a comment, the Charter97.org website turned to military expert, retired major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksiy Hetman:

— The goal is the same as the Kursk operation: to prevent the Russians from attacking Ukraine from these territories and to create a buffer zone deep into the territory of the Russian Federation. Much has already been said by the Ukrainian military-political leadership, analysts and experts, both in Ukraine and abroad, that if the war cannot be stopped, then it must be transferred to the territory of the aggressor. This is what we are doing.

— How might events develop?

— It is difficult to say. It depends on what forces the Russians send there. What forces Ukraine will use there, what the combat orders were for this operation. It is unlikely that the task was to reach Belgorod or Kursk. From a military and political point of view, there is no point in occupying these cities.

But to advance tens of kilometers into the territory of the Russian Federation is what is called “transferring the war to enemy territory”. As Churchill once said, any country that begins an aggressive war against another must understand that sooner or later the war will come to its territory. This is what is happening now.

— Can these events affect the course of the negotiations that are taking place between the parties in Saudi Arabia?

— Any events on the front line affect these negotiations. The more serious Ukraine's position, the more successes we have on the front line, the more successful the results of these negotiations can be for us.
