Local oil refinery may have been targeted.
On the night of March 23, residents of Volgograd reported hearing explosions, with unknown drones allegedly attempting to attack a local oil refinery.
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing Russian Telegram channels, multiple explosions were heard in the Kirovsky district of Volgograd. The SHOT Telegram channel reported that air defense systems allegedly intercepted aerial targets approaching the refinery. Eyewitnesses described hearing the distinctive sounds of drones and witnessing flashes in the sky, with one of the flashes captured on video.
Additionally, at least two explosions were reported in Kalach-na-Donu, a city about 66 km from Volgograd. Preliminary reports suggest the drones traveled through Morozovsk, Surovikino, and Kalach-na-Donu in the Rostov region at low altitudes.
Explosions in Astrakhan Region
That same night, residents of Akhtubinsk, Astrakhan region, also reported hearing explosions and witnessing air defense activity. According to 24 Kanal, "red flashes" were seen in the sky.
Reports indicate that UAVs were detected in the suburbs of Akhtubinsk, but no confirmed damage to military facilities has been reported so far.
By 5 AM, Russian authorities introduced temporary flight restrictions at airports in Saratov and Volgograd, likely in response to the ongoing drone threat.
