What for?
Chinese authorities have executed four Canadians for drug offences. This was reported by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, specifying that the executions took place several months ago, but have become known only now, reports Bild.
As is known, usually in China the death penalty is carried out through shooting, less often - by lethal injection.
According to the Chinese side, the executed received the death sentence for drug-related offences. They all held dual citizenship - Canadian and Chinese. However, Beijing does not recognise dual citizenship, which was the basis for denying clemency.
‘We strongly condemn these executions,’ Joly said, adding that she had personally asked Chinese authorities for clemency.
China's foreign ministry justified the death sentences, saying they were imposed in strict accordance with the law. Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasised that the Chinese judicial system ‘treats defendants of all nationalities equally’ and considers cases ‘strictly and fairly’. The identities of those executed have not been disclosed at the request of their families.
