The man was detained together with his common-law wife.
As it became known to Flagstaff from several sources, Homel resident Dzmitry Novikau was detained by the police at the end of October 2014 together with his common-law wife Viktoryja Razuvanava. The detention took place in Minsk, where Dzmitry and Viktoryja had recently lived.
The reason for the detention was photographs from the 2020 rally, found during a search of the phone. Dzmitry's trial is scheduled to begin at the end of March under Article 342 “Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them.” Viktoryja’s status is being established.
Dzmitry Novikau is known in Homel by the nickname Ognevit as a singer-songwriter, popularizer of science, local historian, blogger. Recently, his activities have been associated with the popularization of archeology and paleontology.
At the end of 2024, his projects — the Telegram channel “Uncle Ognevit’s Tales,” the PaleoNews website, and the YouTube channel with a guide to Belarus — stopped updating.
On the PaleoNews website, Dzmitry published paleontological news, translations from foreign news agencies, and information received from Russian scientists.
On the YouTube channel, Novikau shared his favorite routes and interesting finds, talked about interesting but non-obvious places and attractions in Belarus that are usually not written about in standard guides and travel guides.
Subscribers to his local history channel attempted to independently search for Dmitry Novikov and came to a disappointing conclusion: “All the channels that posted about the author’s disappearance deleted their posts, which is a bad sign.”
It is noteworthy that several active accounts were found in Telegram posing as Dzmitry Novikau’s contact page. It is likely that such accounts were created for the purpose of provocation.
