For pedestrians and cyclists.
Latvia is considering the possibility of closing the border with Belarus for pedestrians and cyclists, it is a matter of at least six calendar months.
The State Border Guard of Latvia intends to ask the government to close partially the only operating border crossing point on the border with Belarus. It's about the checkpoint ‘Paternieki,’ which is called ‘Hryharoushchyna’ from the territory of Belarus.
According to the head of the State Border Guard of Latvia, Guntis Pujāts, he intends to submit a corresponding proposal to the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia to close the checkpoint for pedestrians and cyclists as early as 17 March 2025. At the same time, this measure, if implemented, will not affect motor vehicles.
‘We have come to the conclusion that there is a high risk that the crossing point could be used for mass infiltration of illegal migrants into Latvia,’ Pujāts said.
According to him, if the Latvian government approves the proposal, the Belarusian-Latvian border crossing point will be partially closed for at least six months.
