The case involves lobbyists from the tech giant Huawei.
Representatives of the Chinese company Huawei have been denied access to the European Parliament in Brussels due to the consequences of a new corruption scandal. This was reported by Belgian media outlets Le Soir and Knack, as well as the portal Follow the Money, according to Polish Radio.
According to the European Parliament's Transparency Register, the Chinese tech giant currently has nine accredited representatives. The European Parliament leadership has barred them from entering the building, citing precautionary measures.
The decision was made the day after reports surfaced that lobbyists working for the Chinese company had bribed current and former members of the European Parliament to improve Huawei's image in the EU. This involved expensive gifts, tickets to matches, and luxury trips to China.
In the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgian police sealed off two offices of parliamentary assistants from Italy and Bulgaria. As part of a special operation by Belgian intelligence services, hundreds of police officers conducted searches and made arrests at 21 addresses across Belgium, Portugal, and France.
