Forbes reveals details of a successful attack.
Ukraine has a new cruise missile, the "Long Neptune", with a range of 1,000 km, and has already used it against Russia, writes Forbes.
"We have significant results," President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday. "Long Neptune has been tested and successfully used in combat operations. A new Ukrainian missile, a precise strike. The range is a thousand kilometers."
The "Long Neptune" is an extended version of Ukraine's Neptune anti-ship cruise missile, which is 5 meters long—the same weapon that sank the Russian Black Sea Fleet flagship "Moskva" in April 2022.
The "Long Neptune" carries more fuel than the standard Neptune. It has been in development for years. When Zelensky recently promised that Ukraine would produce 100,000 long-range munitions by 2025, he was partially referring to "Long Neptune", as well as numerous long-range explosive drones capable of traveling more than 1,600 km to strike deep inside Russia.
Deep Strikes
The successful use of "Long Neptune", as mentioned by Zelensky, was likely the March 14 strike on an oil refinery in Tuapse, Russia, located approximately 480 km from the front line in Ukraine. This attack on Tuapse was the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities, which last year reduced production by 10%.
The "Long Neptune" is a crucial weapon. Striking harder than attack drones—some of which are modified sports aircraft—the new missile helps Ukraine reduce its reliance on the United States and Europe for advanced long-range munitions. The U.S., under President Donald Trump, is at best an unreliable ally, while Europe lacks the capacity to produce the number of modern cruise missiles Ukraine needs.
Other Ukrainian-made munitions are also approaching the front, including air-launched glide bombs and ground-based ballistic missiles. While Trump hopes that Ukraine will agree to a potential U.S.-brokered ceasefire, which would favor Russia, Zelensky's government is preparing for the war to continue—and possibly escalate further.
As a reminder, on March 15, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the new Ukrainian missile "Long Neptune" had successfully passed testing and combat use.
