During this time, the Kremlin could restore its military potential.
If the war in Ukraine stops or freezes and NATO does not rearm, Russia could be ready for a large-scale war in Europe in about five years, according to an assessment by the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (FE).
The Danish intelligence service's assessment is cited by DR.
Danish intelligence warns that the military threat from Russia will grow in the coming years.
Among the reasons why a major war in Europe would be possible, Danish intelligence cites the fact that, in addition to military action in Ukraine, Russia has begun “a major restoration and reform of its armed forces.”
Over the past year, these efforts have evolved from restoration to “an intensified build-up of military power with the aim of waging a war against NATO,” the threat assessment says.
“Russia has already managed to increase its potential for both modernization of military equipment and a significant increase in military production,” the report says.
“According to the Danish intelligence service, Russia is already capable of freeing up resources for arming itself against NATO, not least due to the financial and material support it receives from outside.”
As the department noted, if the fighting in Ukraine ceases, Russia will be capable of waging a local war in one of its neighboring countries in about six months.
In about two years, Russia will pose a real threat to one or more NATO countries and will thus be ready for a regional war against several countries in the Baltic Sea region, the assessment adds.
In about five years, Russia may be ready for a large-scale war on the European continent without the participation of the United States, the report says.
At the same time, these time periods suggest that NATO will not simultaneously rearm at the same pace.
