Benin's President Addresses Nation Amid Rebellion
Patrice Talon

A group of military officers attempted to stage a coup d'état.

Benin has suppressed a military mutiny and prevented a coup d'état, the African country's President Patrice Talon said in a televised address to the nation.

The politician said the mutiny was staged by a small group of military officers, but the army had put it down.

"All pockets of putsch have been cleared. The act of betrayal [of the rebels] will not go unpunished," Talon said.

He emphasized that the authorities are in full control of the situation and will ensure order everywhere, so citizens can go about their daily business in peace.

The day before, a group of military officers attempted to stage a coup d'état in Benin. The rebels attacked Talon's residence and later seized the building of the national television station and announced on air the creation of a military reconstruction committee and the removal of the president from power. The mutiny was suppressed and 13 people were detained. However, the leader, Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, managed to escape.
