A military group has removed the president of an African country from office.
A coup d'état took place in the African nation of Benin on Sunday, December 7. A group of military officers announced they had taken power, removed President Patrice Talon from office and dissolved the current government.
It was reported by BBC.
The French embassy in Benin reported on social media X about the shooting near the presidential residence in the capital Cotonou and urged French citizens to stay at home for security reasons.
The country's national television said the military had removed President Patrice Talon from power and declared control of the state. Lt. Col. Tigri Pascal, they said, will head a military transition council.
The military attributed its actions to dissatisfaction with Talon's way of governing the state. The 67-year-old president was a year away from completing his second term and new elections were scheduled for April.
Similar coups have become increasingly common in West Africa - particularly in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger - in recent years, raising concerns about growing instability in the region. Just a week ago, President Oumaro Sissoko Embalo was overthrown from power in neighboring Guinea-Bissau.
