War Minister Pete Hegseth has revealed the details.

The United States is going to modernize its nuclear triad. This was announced by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, speaking at the Ronald Reagan National Defense Forum. Hegseth stressed that modernization should provide additional tools "to support deterrence and manage escalation."

The secretary said Washington faces challenges from "two other major nuclear powers" and intends to test both nuclear warheads and their delivery vehicles "on an equal footing." "We will never allow our nation to remain vulnerable to nuclear blackmail," Hegseth noted.

In late October, Vladimir Putin announced the completion of "decisive tests" of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered intercontinental cruise missile, calling it a "unique" piece of weaponry with "unlimited range." Donald Trump characterized the statements as "inappropriate," noting that Moscow should have focused on ending the war in Ukraine. He also recalled the presence of a U.S. nuclear submarine off Russian shores. Putin then went on to talk about "successful tests" of the Poseidon nuclear torpedo.

With this background, the US president instructed the Pentagon to "immediately" start preparing for nuclear tests. As Reuters noted, Washington last conducted such a test in 1992. Hegseth said that resuming testing is a "very responsible way" to maintain deterrence, specifying that the Pentagon will work together with the Department of Energy.

In early November, Trump also emphasized that the US does not intend to remain the only country refraining from testing while "other nations conduct them." He mentioned Russia, North Korea, China and Pakistan, which he said may conduct such tests covertly. Asked if that meant a return to detonating warheads after a more than 30-year hiatus, Trump said, "We will test nuclear weapons like other countries."
