Bloomberg: Europe Persuades Zelensky Not To Agree To Withdrawal Of Troops From Donbass

Representatives of EU states will travel to Washington in the coming days.

European leaders are trying to convince Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky not to go for a possible agreement on withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass without reliable security guarantees from the United States.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

According to the publication, Europe's main goal is to avoid a situation when Zelensky, under pressure from the United States, will be forced to withdraw troops from Donbass and agree to a deal without serious American security guarantees

European diplomats believe that such a scenario could create a strategic vacuum and threaten the security of the entire region.

Representatives of several European states are expected to travel to Washington in the coming days to discuss these risks with the American administration.

Now, Europe is adhering to the tactic of publicly supporting American initiatives, hoping that Moscow itself will derail potential negotiations. However, the publication estimates that this approach is running out of steam, and it is not known whether there is a backup plan.

Bloomberg also notes that the British side believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, in a meeting with U.S. special envoy Steve Whitkoff, rejected U.S. proposals because they were "too favorable to Ukraine."

European diplomats admit that recent contacts with U.S. and Ukrainian representatives have been difficult. Along with this, they are preparing for a possible scenario in which Donald Trump may actually move away from the war issue if an agreement cannot be reached.

Bloomberg warns: there is a risk that the US will withdraw from the process altogether, leaving Europe alone with the problem of further support for Ukraine. In such a case, EU countries will have to decide whether they are capable of providing Kiev with the necessary military and financial assistance.

At the same time, as the publication emphasizes, it is still unclear whether Europe can form a viable long-term financing mechanism for Ukraine.
