Washington wants to restore "the stability of the Eurasian space."
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new National Security Strategy outlining his administration's foreign policy priorities. A key emphasis is placed on strengthening the US military presence in the Western Hemisphere to combat migration, drug trafficking and the growing influence of competing powers, writes Politico (translated by Charter97.org).
The 33-page document, released by the White House on Thursday, calls border protection "a core element of national security" and presents the so-called "Trump Doctrine," an updated reading of the Monroe Doctrine. The U.S. intends to prevent the strengthening of outside forces in Latin America, the Caribbean and near its borders, including control over ports, military facilities and strategic infrastructure.
Special attention is paid to strengthening the presence of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard to control sea lanes, fight illegal migration and drug trafficking. It also announced plans to cooperate more actively with Latin American countries in the extraction of strategic resources, including rare earth metals.
China is identified in the strategy as a long-term economic rival. At the same time, the U.S. states its intention to maintain "mutually beneficial trade relations" on the condition of "reciprocity and fairness." The previous US position on Taiwan is also confirmed - Washington does not support unilateral changes in the status quo.
With regard to Ukraine, the document speaks of the need for an early cessation of hostilities, but criticism of Russia is minimal. The strategy is much harsher in its assessment of the situation in Europe, pointing to threats to democracy, migration risks and a "crisis of civilization."
Trump called the document a "roadmap for preserving America's greatness" and stressed his commitment to traditional values.
