The billionaire made a prediction.
Billionaire Ilon Musk has predicted that the political future of the United States for the next 12 years will be determined by a coalition of Trump and Vance. During a private speech for Republican Party attendees and alumni in late November, the SpaceX and Tesla founder said that after Donald Trump's second term ends in 2028, the country will face two full presidential terms under current Vice President J.D. Vance. This is reported by Politico.
Mask's prediction comes at a time of intense debate over the future of the Republican Party. While Vance, as Trump's closest ally, is considered a major contender for the nomination in 2028, his position is not uncontested. According to fresh polls, his initial 20-point lead over Donald Trump Jr. - another potential candidate - has begun to shrink. In addition, incumbent President Donald Trump has periodically spoken out about the possibility of running for a third term, which is explicitly prohibited by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Political analysts, including Jonathan Karl, author of biographical books on Trump, regard such statements as strategic "trolling" and a way to put pressure on Vance.
Vance himself has publicly maintained restraint about his presidential ambitions. In a recent interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, he noted that he is focused on his current vice presidential duties but will discuss his political future with Trump after the 2026 midterm elections.
Musk's announcement marks a new phase in his complicated and volatile relationship with Donald Trump. After becoming the largest private donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, Musk was named a senior adviser to the president and headed the new Office of Government Efficiency, but left the White House as early as May 2025. The tycoon subsequently joined critics demanding that Trump declassify documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case, but in recent months has shown renewed loyalty by publicly thanking the president on social network X (Twitter).
