Ukraine Will Protect The Belarusian Language

Russian, no.

On December 3, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted amendments to the law on ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

The document deals with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, an international agreement that Ukraine ratified back in 2003. The new law updates the Ukrainian rules for its application and defines which languages the state is committed to protect.

The updated list of languages recognized as minority and in need of support includes the Belarusian language, which now receives state guarantees in the cultural, educational and public spheres. This means that Belarusian initiatives, schools, media and associations in Ukraine get more opportunities for their activities.

The Russian language is completely excluded from the Ukrainian list. If earlier the Charter in the Ukrainian legislation applied to Russian, it has now lost the status of a language that the state is obliged to support as a minority language.
