A tourist visit, not a path to peace.
Talks between U.S. President Steve Whitkoff's special envoy and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Dec. 2 do not appear to have brought the Russia-Ukraine war any closer to an end. The fruitless talks were reported by Sky News Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett.
He said Trump's envoys were greeted like VIPs in Moscow. For them, the Russians organized a motorcade from the airport and lunch at a Michelin restaurant. Whitkoff and Kushner also had time to walk around Red Square.
"Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner seemed to be walking more of a tourist trail than a path to peace," Bennett noted.
"More than six hours after arriving in Russia, they finally got down to business in the Kremlin. And by then it was clear that the one thing they had come to Moscow for was not going to be offered to them there: Russian agreement to their latest peace plan," the journalist added.
The Sky News correspondent said Russia wants to return to a 28-point peace plan that takes Moscow's demands into account. And the Kremlin believes it has the right to dictate terms because of the situation on the battlefield.
"It is no coincidence that on the eve of a US delegation's visit to Moscow, Russia announced the alleged capture of Pokrovsk, a key strategic target in the Donetsk region. It was a message designed to assert Russia's dominance and, as a result, strengthen its demands, not weaken them," the piece said.
Bennett also cited another reason why Putin is not going to make any compromises. He may believe that U.S. and Russian interests are aligned. Both Moscow and Washington, the dictator is convinced, seek closer relations between the two countries, which can only happen after the end of the war.
"Throughout this process, the United States has time and again taken a position favorable to Moscow. The way these negotiations are being conducted is just the latest example. The Americans are forcing Ukrainians to come to them - first in Geneva, then in Florida. As far as Moscow is concerned, the opposite is true. Whitkoff is happy to make the long overnight trip and then wait a long time for an audience with Putin. Time and again in this process, the US defaults to a position that favors Moscow," Bennett noted.
"All of this gives the impression that when it comes to Russia, the US prefers appeasement to pressure," he added.
According to the Kremlin, Russia and the US agreed not to disclose details of yesterday's talks in Moscow.
"I doubt that Vladimir Zelensky is full of hope," the correspondent concluded.
