The meeting lasted 5 hours, but no agreement was reached to end the Russian war against Ukraine.
In talks to end the war against Ukraine, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin used a combination of charm, elaborate subterfuge and direct threats to show U.S. negotiators Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner the exact position of the Russian Federation on the issue.
According to Politico, U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Whitkoff as well as White House chief of staff Kushner's son-in-law walked around Moscow yesterday and dined at an upscale restaurant while Putin kept them waiting for a meeting in the Kremlin to discuss a peace deal on Ukraine.
"While the Americans were killing time, Putin addressed the press at an investment forum, where he accused Europe of derailing the peace process and hinted at future escalation," the publication noted.
The journalists noted that the Russian dictator's meeting with U.S. negotiators ended up starting three hours later than scheduled. The discussion of a peace agreement on Ukraine lasted 5 hours and ended well past midnight local time.
Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov, who also attended the meeting, called the conversation "useful, constructive and very informative," but added that there was still "a lot of work" to be done.
"We are definitely not far from peace," he commented.
The publication emphasized that according to Ushakov, Putin outlined "destructive actions of the European side," indicating his attempt to shift the blame for any failure to reach a peace agreement to the EU, which was not even at the meeting.
The publication recalled that Trump's "peace plan" calls for Ukraine to give up Donbass and not join NATO. However, it is less clear what Trump is demanding from Russia and what concessions Moscow is willing to make.
It is noteworthy that even on the eve of the Moscow talks, Putin showed no signs of backing down from his demand for Ukraine's de facto surrender.
"In fact, neither the previous talks in Istanbul, nor the August summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska, nor Whitkoff's five previous visits to Moscow have led to a softening of the Kremlin's position," the publication emphasized.
The journalists pointed out that there is no indication yet that the next talks will lead to any change in Moscow's position.
