Media: Head Of German Foreign Intelligence Has Called Naryshkin
Martin Yeager

What is known.

The head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Martin Jaeger had a telephone conversation with the head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergey Naryshkin. This was reported by German TV channel WDR on Tuesday, December 23, reports DW.

According to WDR, the conversation took place "last week," that is, December 15-21. The TV channel calls it "a rare case of direct contact between German and Russian agencies." Its content is unknown, WDR notes.

The conversation was published on the WDR Investigativ ("WDR Investigations") account on the social network X. The author of the material is listed as journalist Florian Flade.

"BND as a matter of principle does not comment publicly on issues that relate to possible intelligence activities," the intelligence service responded to WDR's request.

The Russian side also did not confirm Naryshkin's conversation with Yeager. On Dec. 18, the SVR chief said he spoke by phone with the head of Britain's MI6, Blaze Metrevely.

Yeger became head of the BND in September 2025. He previously served as Germany's ambassador to Ukraine. In October, the official called to prepare for an escalation of the conflict with Russia.

"We should not relax, believing that a possible Russian attack will not happen before 2029. We are already under threat today," Yeager said at the time.
