For six months.
The EU Council on December 22 extended economic sanctions against Russia for another six months: they will remain in place until July 31, 2026, writes "European Pravda", the Council's press service reported.
These are economic sanctions first imposed in 2014 and significantly expanded from February 2022 in response to a full-scale Russian invasion.
They consist of a wide range of sectoral measures, in particular restrictions on trade, finance, energy, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transportation and luxury goods.
The sanctions also cover: a ban on the import or transfer by sea of crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU, the exclusion of several Russian banks from the SWIFT system, and the suspension of the activities and licenses in the European Union of several Kremlin-backed disinformation media outlets.
In addition, the specific measures give the EU the ability to counter sanctions circumvention.
The European Union remains ready to increase pressure on Russia, in particular by imposing additional sanctions, the EU Council said.
Sources said the new, 20th package of European Union sanctions against Russia will be presented shortly after the New Year.
At the same time, the European Union has decided to impose sanctions on "shadow fleet" vessels that transport Russian oil separately from the sanctions packages.
