Rutte pointed to the China factor.
During an interview with the German publication Bild, the journalists reminded NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Vladimir Putin has been in power in Russia since 1999 and asked whether it would ever be possible to "get rid of this dictator." In response, the head of the Alliance urged against illusions and pointed to Moscow's growing dependence on Beijing.
"Some people say, 'If not Putin, someone even worse can come.' All I can say is that whatever happens in Russia, we should not be naive. NATO is a peaceful and defensive alliance. But we see a global nexus between China and Russia. China is looking at Taiwan, and I am convinced that in case of military action, Beijing will put pressure on its junior partner - Putin-led Russia - to keep us busy here in Europe," Rutte noted.
He said that cooperation between Moscow and Beijing poses an additional challenge to European security. In this regard, the NATO secretary general stressed, European countries need to be as vigilant as possible, increase defense spending, strengthen armed forces and "recruit the best men and women in uniform they can find."
