The next attack will be fatal for Putin.
We are now in the most dangerous time since the end of World War II, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said. He said the allies are working to ensure that once a peace deal is reached, Ukraine will never again be attacked by Russia.
"Putin must realize that a new attack would be fatal for him. There are three levels for this," he said in an interview with Bild.
The first level is Ukraine's armed forces. According to Rutte, they should be in excellent shape. Right now the Ukrainian army is doing the impossible, but it must be able to defend the country even after the war ends or during a long ceasefire.
The second tier is the "Coalition of the willing," led by France and Britain with the participation of Germany and other countries. This coalition will provide whatever is necessary in addition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to ensure that Putin does not dare attack again.
The third tier is the United States. The allies and Ukraine are now working to bring these three elements - the Ukrainian army, the "Coalition of the willing," and the U.S. contribution - together in a way that makes it clear to Putin: Ukraine will never again be an easy target.
One key aspect is the possibility of sending European peacekeepers into Ukraine after a ceasefire if Russia tries to attack again. "I can say that some European countries have signaled: if necessary, they are ready to participate with manpower. The concept of the 'Coalition of the willing' is being worked out at the moment: how the deployment of troops will be organized, what will happen on land, sea and in the air. All these elements are being carefully developed," Rutte emphasized.
