The US has given Lukashenko's friend the opportunity to leave the country.
Venezuela's dictator Nicolas Maduro may go to Russia for asylum after his possible resignation. Senator Marcwain Mullin said this on CNN.
"Speaking of which, we gave Maduro the opportunity to leave the country. We said he could leave the country and go to Russia or another country," the lawmaker said.
On Nov. 30, Maduro said he was ready to end his term in office, but not before 18 months.
According to CNN, some U.S. officials considered the scenario proposed by the Venezuelan leader as a possible way out of the crisis, but the White House decided to seek Maduro's immediate resignation.
CNN sources also noted that Maduro and his associates have contacted the White House through several channels and are now discussing with the U.S. side what the interaction between the countries could be.
