Lukashenko's Diplomatic Fiasco

Lukashenko's Diplomatic Fiasco

Lots of trips, nothing.

While Lukashenko and his eldest and youngest son are making their grand diplomatic tour, other "important people" are not sitting still either, writes planbmedia.io. Middle son Dmitry Lukashenko went to Indonesia. Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Wolfowitz is visiting Vietnam after a visit to Turkey. All in all, a lot of very high diplomacy. The only pity is that the practical benefit to the country from it is not very obvious.

Lukashenko started his diplomatic scourge with Myanmar. And for good reason. Here he could finally feel himself a great world leader. In this country Lukashenko was received with such pomp that even he felt a little embarrassed.

"Frankly speaking, we don't deserve such attention yet," Lukashenko said.

And indeed we don't deserve it. In the spring, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko boasted that the countries had set a record in trade. But he was too shy to name the record figures. Because before the record was a trade turnover of $30 million. Following Lukashenko's visit and a joint business forum with this friendly country, contracts worth $9 million were signed.

Not unlike, of course, the president of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, who from a trip to Trump in early November brought deals worth more than $17 billion. But here, as they say, who learned how quickly to crawl away from an eastern ally.

But it's not the turnover that's expensive, it's the attention that's expensive.

"We have met with you six times this year. This shows that there is and cannot be any isolation for our countries," Lukashenko said.

or that two lonely people simply have no one else to meet. For the first two days in Oman, Lukashenko met no one at all. And not even once appeared in public. But then he came to the meeting with the sultan with two sons at once - the elder and the younger.

Apparently, to show to whom he could give the money left for safekeeping, if something happens to the owner. Well, because otherwise it is difficult to explain such attention to Oman. The volume of trade with it last year amounted to 5 million dollars.

The middle son, Dmitry, was visiting Indonesia at the time. He came to discuss strategic partnerships in the agricultural sector. Unlike Oman, he at least had something to discuss with Indonesia. The volume of trade with Indonesia last year amounted to 180 million.

And after that Lukashenko went to Algeria. Also a Belarusian partner of exceptional importance. With great mutual interests.

"The issue of responsibility of European countries for colonialism and genocide is also one of the links in our policy," said Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov.

Lukashenko can talk about genocide, of course, with great knowledge. Other topics of mutual interest are a bit more difficult to deal with. Last year, the volume of trade between Belarus and Algeria amounted to 50 million dollars.

In total, the three friendly countries, where Lukashenko is touring, traded with Belarus for less than 100 million dollars. Just for comparison, Belarusian exports to unfriendly Lithuania last year amounted to 418 million dollars, imports from Lithuania in general more than 2 billion dollars.

But the lack of benefit for the country does not mean that there can be no benefit for its individual representatives. For example, Lukashenko has almost agreed with the Omani sheikhs to develop the natural riches of the Berezinsk reserve at a similar price. And Myanmar, I'm not implying anything, is the second largest producer of opium poppies in the world.

So it's not all Lukashenko has to worry about the people. It is necessary to leave some money for his children.
