A military analyst told what is happening in Pokrovsk and Volchansk.
Putin once again gave wishful thinking by claiming to "capture" Pokrovsk, Volchansk, despite refutations by the Ukrainian military and Western analysts.
What is really happening now in these towns? The website Charter97.org talked about it with Ukrainian military and political observer of the group "Information Resistance" Alexander Kovalenko
- If we talk about Pokrovsk, of course, the situation there is steadily difficult, but there is no need to talk about the capture of the city at all. This is an absolute manipulation.
Today, Russian troops fully control only the southern part of Pokrovsk. At the same time, the central part of the city is an arena of fighting between their sabotage groups and our mopping-up groups. The Russians do not have full control over the central part. They are able to move in small groups through the central part of the city until they are spotted. And they do this predominantly in the fog. The occupiers use the fog to move around the central part of the city. They have a limited number of controlled areas in the center, and these are mostly administrative buildings where they can hide when there is no fog. The northern part of the city is completely under the control of the AFU. So this is the situation in Pokrovsk.
In Volchansk, frankly speaking, I was surprised to hear this, because the Russian side has been in control of most of the northern part of Volchansk for a very long time, since 2024. The area of the industrial zone near the Volch River is a place of the same format of fighting as, for example, in Pokrovsk. Everything south of the Volcha River, the central and eastern part of Volchansk, is under the control of the AFU.
Volchansk itself has been completely destroyed, turned into ruins. There is no reason to say that it is controlled by the Russian side.
- Why does the Kremlin need to announce such "victories" now, if the fighting there has been going on for more than a year?
- The Russian high command is now generating all sorts of fakes. Most likely, they are designed primarily to influence the internal consumer of this information, who does not cross-check it with independent sources to demonstrate any effectiveness. The year 2025 is coming to an end. What has the Russian army achieved in 2025, apart from capturing forest belts, fields and some villages of 10-15 houses, which are completely destroyed?
Not a single major city has been captured, not a single district center has been captured. They urgently need to show something for the domestic consumer.
- Zelensky said that the AFU had almost cleared Kupyansk from Russian infantry groups. Tell us about the situation in the city and how far Ukrainian forces have advanced?"
- Yes, this is indeed true. In the area of Kupyansk, it is the right-bank part of the city that is now being cleared. Stabilization actions have yielded their results. Russian troops are mainly in the northwestern part of the city. This is the industrial zone, the area of the stadium square. What is north of Stadium Square along the R-79 highway is the zone where the Russians have places of control, accumulation and concentration of forces and means. Predominantly forces, not means.
Now this very zone is being cleared. It's a little bit more difficult than the main city limits, where they managed to penetrate a couple months ago, because it's an industrial zone. But this process is ongoing. If we compare Kupyansk with, for example, Volchansk or Pokrovsk, the situation in Kupyansk is much better and more controlled by the Ukrainian defense forces.
In this regard, of course, the statement about the encirclement of Kupyansk, about the control of Kupyansk is much more nonsense than, for example, the statement about the control of Pokrovsk. In Pokrovsk they can still somehow manipulate it, because they have stable zones of control in the south, and they are trying to expand them to the central part of the city. But in Kupyansk, it is only the northwestern outskirts of the city, and then they are in a closed and extremely limited position there.
- The videos of Ukrainian fighters destroying another of Putin's "flag-bearers" show the real price of such "victories." How long will the Russian army have enough for such meaty attacks?
- Unfortunately, Russia has plenty of expendable material. From next year they will have mandatory conscription there every month. Next year conscripts at the enlisted level will be equalized to contract soldiers through the State Duma through bills. Recruits will be chased into the war zone. Recruiters are scaling in other countries, especially in Africa. Therefore, unfortunately, they will have enough human resources.
So Ukraine now needs to concentrate entirely on countering their infantry component. We should make maximum efforts to destroy as much of their human resource as possible. As tolerant, democratic, inhumane as it may sound, we need to concentrate all our efforts now on 2026 to eliminate as many Russian occupants as possible.
