Tajikistan Asks CSTO To Deal With Putin's Friends

The country is under attack by the Taliban.

Tajikistan is discussing with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) the possibility of involving the Russian military in joint patrolling the border with Afghanistan after the shootings in late November, Reuters reported, citing three sources in the Central Asian country's security agencies.

Five Chinese nationals were killed and five injured by gunfire from Afghanistan over the past week. On December 1, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon held a working meeting with heads of the republic's security agencies to discuss the situation on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and the strengthening of its security.

A source in the republic's Security Council told Reuters that a decision on the involvement of CSTO forces had not been made and was under consideration. He said talks have been held with the Russian side to bring in the 201st Russian military base stationed in Tajikistan, Russia's largest military land grouping outside it, to jointly patrol the Tajik-Afghan border.

"We are still negotiating (with the CSTO) and they are under consideration," the source said, not ruling out a decision will be made within this week.

It should be noted that on July 3, 2025, Russia was the first in the world to officially recognize the Second Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban). On October 7, 2025, the Taliban came to Moscow for the first time in official status.
