U.S. President Donald Trump gave Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro a deadline of November 28 to safely leave the country in a phone call. The next day, Trump announced the closure of airspace over Venezuela.
This was reported by Reuters.
The phone conversation between Trump and Maduro took place on Nov. 21.
Reuters quoted three sources as saying that Maduro told Trump he was willing to leave Venezuela on the condition of a full amnesty for him and his family, including the lifting of all U.S. sanctions.
He also demanded the lifting of sanctions on more than 100 Venezuelan officials, many of whom the U.S. accuses of human rights abuses, drug trafficking or corruption, the sources said.
Trump rejected most of his requests during the conversation, which lasted less than 15 minutes, but told Maduro he had a week to leave Venezuela and travel to any place of his own choosing with his family members.
This safe passage expired on Friday, November 28, prompting Trump on Saturday to announce the closure of Venezuelan airspace, sources told Reuters.
Trump's talks with advisers on Maduro
According to a senior US official cited by reporters, Trump was scheduled to hold talks with his advisers on Monday, December 1, particularly on methods to pressure Venezuela.
A source in Washington familiar with internal talks in the Trump administration did not rule out the possibility of a negotiated exit for Maduro, but said significant differences remain and important details have yet to be resolved.
