Trump: I Don't Have To Ask Congress For Authorization To Strike Venezuela

Earlier, the U.S. president recognized the Venezuelan government as a terrorist organization.

The US administration is not obliged to seek authorization from Congress for possible strikes on ground targets in Venezuela. This was stated by American President Donald Trump, answering questions from journalists, the broadcast was conducted by the White House.

Trump noted that he does not mind notifying lawmakers, but is not obliged to do so. He also expressed concern that congressmen might leak information about Washington's plans for Venezuela.

"I don't have to tell them. It's been proven," Trump said when asked about the need for congressional consent for military action.

On Dec. 17, Trump announced a "complete and comprehensive blockade of all sub-sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela." He also declared the republic's government a terrorist organization for stealing Washington's assets, and promised that U.S. military activity around the country would intensify until Caracas returned all oil, land and other assets.
