Media: The Kolpino, A Particularly Dangerous Submarine, Was Struck In Novorossiysk

A Russian submarine had previously launched Kalibras at Syria.

OSINTer has determined that Ukrainian Security Service drones in Novorossiysk could have hit the Russian Federation's B-271 Kolpino submarine, writes "Focus".

The identification was made thanks to a video from the Russian media, which was supposed to show that the submarine was OK. What is the history of the Kolpino and what other countries, apart from Ukraine, were threatened by the Varshavyanka project boat?"

Russian propaganda media published footage of the submarine to show that it was not damaged by Ukrainian Sub Sea Baby drones, Defense Express said. At the same time OSINTer noticed special marks on the hull of the submarine, which proved that it was the "Kolpino". The RosSMI video also told something about the condition of the boat, which looked quite different from what it would have looked like if it had survived and did not need repairs.

The portal drew attention to the message of OSINTer with the nickname Duke BG in social network X, who compared the submarine in the RosSMI video with images of three submarines of the Varshavyanka project, which were in Novorossiysk. It was about analyzing photos of B-265 "Krasnodar", B-268 "Veliky Novgorod" or B-271 "Kolpino" (B-237 "Rostov-on-Don" was blown up by ATACMS even earlier). The DE also wrote that after the December 15 incident, the boat settled into the water by 1 meter (according to satellite photos), and now water seems to have been pumped out of it: that is, it probably sustained damage.

The researcher compared the configuration of the paint stains on the hull at the stern hatch and determined that the Russians could have shown either the B-271 "Kolpino", the B-261 "Novorossiysk", or the B-265 "Krasnodar". That said, the latter two boats are not in the Black Sea. Given these considerations, Duke BG concluded that SBU drones hit the "Kolpino" in Novorossiysk.

Obviously, the Ukrainian command has not yet confirmed that the "Kolpino" was hit in Novorossiysk. It is also not clear: the Russian media showed the pier and the submarine at the Novorossiysk pier or in another region of the Russian Federation (the background is blurred).

Russian Federation submarine strike - what is known about the B-271 "Kolpino"

The B-271 "Kolpino" is a Project 636.3 Varshavyanka (Kilo) diesel-electric submarine that was launched in 2016 in St. Petersburg. The boat has a crew of 50 people, can reach speeds of about 30 km/h and is capable of launching four Kalibr cruise missiles. "Varshavyanka" are called "black holes" because they move almost silently and are difficult to detect by sonar. The characteristics of submarines of this project are length of about 74 meters, width of 9 meters, diving depth up to 350 meters.

Before the big war "Kolpino" regularly participated in RAF operations in the Mediterranean Sea. Among other things, the submarine launched Kalibras in Syria, striking Islamic State militants. In support of the Assad government hit targets in the provinces of Deir ez-Zor, Mayadin, Abu Kamali: missiles flew up to 700 km.

The submarine, which could have been blown up in Novorossiysk, also threatened Britain's Astute submarine. The incident took place in April 2018. The British boat was in the Mediterranean Sea, preparing to go into position to strike a target in Syria, but was caught on sonar by a Russian submarine. The Astute was unable to complete the task and floated around the sea for a week until it laid low, the Russian media said, calling the incident a "cat-and-mouse game."
