US Approves Largest-ever Military Aid To Taiwan

The package included HIMARS, Javelin and more.

The United States has approved the largest military aid package for Taiwan in history. It will amount to $11.1 billion, and the decision itself is considered the largest in the history of US-Taiwan relations.

It was reported by Reuters.

This is the second arms package for Taiwan adopted since President Donald Trump took office in Washington. The weapons are being provided to the island amid increased military and diplomatic pressure from China. As part of the package, Taiwan will receive a number of weapons, including:

HIMARS multiple rocket launchers;

artillery;

Javelin anti-tank missiles;

the latest Altius drones;

equipment, ammunition and spare parts for other military equipment.

The agreement still has to pass the approval stage by the US Congress. The Pentagon has already said the supplies are in the "national, economic and security interests of the United States."

Defense Modernization

For Taiwan, the supplies will be crucial - to maintain the island's defense capabilities. Taiwan's defense is based on an asymmetric warfare model - using mobile, inexpensive and effective defeat systems.

"The United States continues to assist Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defense capabilities, rapidly building a strong deterrent force and taking advantage of asymmetric warfare, which forms the basis for maintaining regional peace and stability," Taiwan's Defense Ministry officially said.

The provision of U.S. military aid remains one of the biggest factors in tensions China claims Taiwan, while the U.S. task is to prevent the Chinese from occupying the island, as Washington has commitments to Taipei, although it does not officially recognize Taiwan.
