Narges Mohammadi's condition has become known.
Human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, a 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who was detained on December 12 on suspicion of working for Israel, was beaten in Iran.
It was reported by The New York Times.
The woman's family reported that Narges Mohammadi was severely beaten. While talking to her relatives, the human rights activist said that she was beaten on the head and neck during her detention. In addition, she received death threats.
Mohammadi's husband, Taghi Rahmani, said she is now in a detention center run by the Intelligence Ministry in the city of Mashhad. He said the woman was feeling unwell.
"We are extremely concerned about her condition, she has many related health problems and we demand that she be examined by an independent doctor," Rahmani said.
Iranian authorities have denied beating the woman. Mashhad's prosecutor general told the state-run Tasnim news agency that the human rights activist and other detainees "are being held in a lawful place of detention with respect for their civil rights."
Mohammadi is accused of allegedly collaborating with Israel. As the NYT writes, these accusations could have serious consequences for her. Following Israel's standoff against Iran in June, Tehran expanded its use of the death penalty for allegations of collaboration with the country.
Nagrez Mohammadi and 10 other prominent activists were arrested on Dec. 12 during the funeral of human rights activist Khosrow Ali Kordi, a former political prisoner who represented imprisoned protesters. The man was found dead in his office in Mashhad. The circumstances of his death are unknown.
