German Chancellor: We Will Not Repeat The Mistakes Of Minsk

The U.S. is ready to commit to security guarantees for Ukraine similar to NATO's Article 5.

The US authorities are ready to assume legal obligations on security guarantees for Ukraine similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on December 15.

"We will not repeat the mistakes of Minsk. Guarantees must be provided to Ukraine. We still have to discuss what exactly this will mean," he said.

Article 5 of the NATO Charter (Washington Treaty of 1949) provides for the principle of collective defense. It states that an attack on one or more NATO member countries is considered an attack on all members of the Alliance. In such an event, each member country undertakes to provide assistance to the attacked ally - including, if necessary, the use of armed forces - to restore and maintain security.
