Lithuania Strengthens Suvalki Corridor Defense

Vilnius strengthens defense of the border with Belarus.

Lithuania has decided to create a new military training ground in the area of Suvalki corridor to strengthen the defense of the border with Belarus.

This is reported by Delfi.

The new military training ground will have a brigade scale and should become a key element of strengthening the defense capabilities of the country and NATO in one of the most vulnerable areas of Eastern Europe - on the border with Belarus.

The matter concerns the creation of the brigade-level Kapčiamesti training ground in Lazdijas municipality.

The decision was made by the State Defense Council of Lithuania, said the chief advisor to the Lithuanian President Deividas Matulijonis after the council meeting.

He said that the chosen territory is optimal from the military point of view and provides a high level of security for the country. The range is intended for brigade exercises and training of personnel, and its creation will allow Lithuania, Poland and NATO to better control the defense of the key corridor.

Lithuania also plans to expand the existing Tauraga range.

The area of the range will be doubled by the territories of the Jurbarka municipality, which will make it possible to conduct brigade-level exercises, deploy heavy equipment and practice cooperation with allies.

The authorities assure that the development and further operation of the range will be carried out in close coordination with local communities, and the municipalities will receive compensation packages and infrastructure support from the state.

Earlier, when discussing the possibility of building a new range, local residents created a petition against the decision.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas noted that technical issues regarding the new ranges are almost resolved, and the final decisions will be implemented in the spring. Thus, in October 2025, the Ministry of Defense and the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities signed a cooperation agreement on a package of benefits for municipalities where military facilities are located or planned.

Lithuania is thus taking a strategic step to improve the security of its border and strengthen cooperation with NATO in the region, which is key to the stability of the Suvalki Corridor.

Recently, Belarusian propagandists published a video in which dictator Alexander Lukashenko addressed to the s He also mentioned the Suvalki corridor in the conversation and threw accusations in the direction of Warsaw and Vilnius.
