Without the construction of other elements, the rocket will only serve a prodigious role.
Russia is deploying the medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik in Belarus. This is a means of pressure primarily on the European Union and NATO, not on Ukraine. This was stated by the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (SVR) Oleh Ivashchenko in a commentary to "Ukrinform".
"We see measures to prepare and deploy the medium-range ballistic missile "Oreshnik" on the territory of Belarus. Russia and Belarus are building military facilities for the launcher, surveillance and communication systems, which are elements of the Oreshnik system." However, as of now, these measures have not yet been implemented," he said.
Ivashchenko added that Russia can physically place the launcher for Oreshnik in Belarus. However, without the construction of other elements, it will only serve as a mockup.
The SVR chief noted that Belarus will not be able to use the Oreshnik on its own. He explained that this missile system will be in the unified control system of the Russian strategic missile forces.
Ivashchenko believes that the deployment of "Oreshnik" on the territory of Belarus is designed to increase pressure on Europe. He also emphasized that this is how Russia wants to secure Oreshnik from being defeated by Ukraine.
"Deployment of Oreshnik on the territory of Belarus is a means of pressure primarily on the EU and NATO, not on Ukraine. Such a step will allow Russia to expand its ability to launch a surprise strike on the capital of any European country and will significantly reduce the time of missile approach compared to the launch from the Kapustin Yar range," the SVR chief added.
