Russians To Cut Off Internet For New Year Holidays

Residents of the Leningrad region have already been warned.

Authorities in Russia's Leningrad Region intend to disable mobile Internet during the New Year holidays due to "provocations" and the region's "geopolitical location," Governor Alexander Drozdenko announced. "It is not excluded that with the approach of New Year holidays and during the vacations due to possible provocations, UAV attacks and attempts of cyber-interference in the work of infrastructure, forced communication restrictions will be applied in the territory of Leningrad Region," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

The governor said that the decision to disconnect the Internet and communication, as well as slow down "certain Internet resources" is made by law enforcement officials based on data about the "operational situation." And in order to preserve the possibility of communication with loved ones, residents of the Leningrad region should "provide for additional communication options," including switching to the state messenger Max and reconfiguring mobile app notifications, Drozdenko said.

St. Petersburg has been experiencing serious mobile Internet outages for several days now. As of December 13, the city ranks first in the number of user complaints on the website "Disruption.rf." Over the past three hours, citizens have sent more than 800 messages about network problems. Similar complaints are recorded by the portal Downdetector. Over the day, residents of St. Petersburg left almost 3 thousand complaints.

At the same time in the region during large-scale shutdowns continue to work services from the "white list" authorized by the authorities. Providers in response to subscribers' complaints claim that the shutdowns are related to security measures that do not depend on them.
