Rutte: We Are Russia's Next Target
Mark Rutte

NATO's secretary general has called for preparations for a war on the scale of World War II.

The propaganda thesis that Russia, while fighting the West today, is supposedly continuing the work of its grandfathers, who won the Great Patriotic War, is one of the foundations of Vladimir Putin's regime. The endless references to victory in that war serve as an ideological justification for the aggression he has unleashed against Ukraine, and now they have finally been realized in Europe. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called for preparations for an equally bloody war, writes Reuters.

"We are Russia's next target," Rutte told a conference in Berlin, reiterating that Putin's regime would be ready to use military force against NATO within five years. "The conflict is at our doorstep" and preparations for it cannot be delayed, he insisted: "Russia has brought war back to Europe. And we must be ready for a war on the scale that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers experienced."

Rutte said not everyone realizes the gravity of the situation: "I fear too many are relaxed, too many do not feel the urgent need [to act], too many think that time is on our side. It's not." Defense spending and arms production must be ramped up quickly to prevent a full-scale war not seen in generations, he said.

European intelligence, military and politicians have repeatedly said that Russia could be ready to attack NATO countries within two to five years. The year 2029 as the time of a possible conflict is being talked about for a reason, the inspector general of Germany's armed forces, Karsten Breuer, told the Munich Security Conference in late November. "Nobody just made up this year"; it is based on "pure analysis," he explained, "It doesn't mean Russia will attack, but it will be in a position to do so."

This timeline also appeared in NATO's 2023 Joint Threat Assessment report. Hybrid warfare, which Russian intelligence services are increasingly deploying, is now seen in the context of that report as preparation for a real armed conflict, European intelligence services say.
