Russian Gas Exports To The EU Will Collapse By 44% In 2025

The loss of Ukrainian transit has hit Russian gas exports painfully.

Pipeline gas exports from Russia to the European Union by the end of 2025 may decrease by 44% compared to 2024, if the current dynamics are maintained, according to Reuters.

According to the European gas transportation group Entsog, in January-November 2025, Russia exported 16.3 billion cubic meters of gas to the European Union via Turkish Stream, which is 1.1 billion cubic meters more than in the same period of 2024. At the same time, the volume of exports of Russian "blue fuel" to the EU in November corresponded to the indicators of October.

The publication recalls that the "Turkish Stream" is the only transit route for Russian gas to Europe after Ukraine decided not to extend the transit agreement with Moscow, which ended on January 1, 2025.

Reuters calculates that in 2024, when Russian gas was also pumped through Ukraine, Gazprom's gas exports to Europe increased by 13% to about 32 billion cubic meters. At the end of this year, the publication calculates that this figure will not exceed 18 billion cubic meters, provided the current trend continues.

Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe peaked in 2018-2019 at more than 175-180 billion cubic meters per year.

In June 2025, the European Commission presented a plan to abandon Russian gas and oil, which provides for the bloc to stop importing Russian gas from 2028.

After lengthy discussions and deliberations, on October 23, the EU approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes, among other things, a ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia from January 2027.
