It became known about the plans of the authorities of the country.
The Latvian government plans to extend the enhanced border protection regime introduced in connection with illegal migration at the Belarusian border for another six months, until June 30, 2026, according to a draft decree posted on the Portal of Legal Acts.
The current enhanced border protection regime is valid until December 31 this year, writes Delfi.lv.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs explains that in fact the level of illegal immigration remains unchanged and high. Although the fence built on the Latvian-Belarusian border serves as an obstacle to illegal crossing of the state border by migrants at any place, there are cases of damage to the fence infrastructure and crossing of the border by migrants.
In these circumstances, the construction of the infrastructure of technical means for restricting illegal immigration, which is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, is of particular importance.
The Ministry emphasizes that the war against Ukraine, initiated by Russia and openly supported by Belarus, is a serious problem. At the same time, 31 illegal migrants were prevented from crossing the border on humanitarian grounds.
Last year, 5,388 people were prevented from illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border, but 26 were allowed into the country on humanitarian grounds.
A strengthened control regime has been established in Ludza Municipality and Ludza County, Kraslava Municipality, Augsdaugava County, Daugavpils and Rezekne County, as well as Kaunas Municipality.
