Deputy Minister of National Defense Carolis Alexa, who is on a visit to Brussels, said he will raise at the EU Foreign Affairs Council the issue of innovative solutions to shoot down contraband balloons launched from Belarus, writes LRT.
"The idea is always there. For now, we are definitely not planning to close the border, because in all likelihood, that would be more of a diplomatic tool that does not fundamentally solve the problem," he told reporters.
The deputy minister said 57 cases of balloon smuggling were reported overnight Sunday alone.
"We need to look for other means that would help achieve the result, but we never rule out all possibilities," he assured.
On Monday, Lithuania's Ministry of Economy and Innovation also said that three consortia have presented the best technological solutions to combat balloon smuggling - represented by IT Logika, Teltonika and Dangaus ļūdis - and the companies will receive 1 million euros in funding.
Jakštas said that this measure will help to solve the problem of balloon smuggling in the long term.
"The results of the competition show that the chosen path is right, we are moving in the right direction," the deputy minister said.
According to him, the country has strengthened the activities of law enforcement agencies in recent years, the search for criminals involved in the transportation of contraband within the country is underway, and further efforts are being made to toughen responsibility for smuggling activities.
