There were 57 cases of smuggled balloons reported overnight Monday.
Following a record influx of smuggled balloons from Belarus, Deputy Interior Minister Vaidas Yakstas says the government is not yet considering closing the border as a response measure, but does not rule out that such a decision could be taken in the future, alfa.lt reported.
"The idea (of closing the border) is always there. For now we really don't plan to close the border, because apparently it would be more as a diplomatic measure of influence, which does not solve the problem in essence," he told reporters on Monday.
The deputy minister said that 57 cases of smuggled balloons were recorded only on Monday night.
"We need to look for other measures that would help achieve the result, but we never rule out all possibilities," he assured. On Monday, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (EIM) also announced that three consortia have presented the best technological solutions to combat smuggled balloons - they are represented by IT Logika, Teltonika and Dangaus šviesos. The companies will receive EUR 1 million in funding.
Jakštas said that this measure will help solve the challenges of smuggled balloons in the long term.
