Russian war criminals should not escape accountability.

U.S. President Donald Trump's drive to end Russia's war against Ukraine should not allow Russian dictator Putin to get away with war crimes committed by Russian troops.

This was stated by European Commissioner for Justice and Democracy Michael McGrath in an interview with Politico.

The publication notes that by doing so, the senior EU official has effectively set a new "red line" for a peace agreement.

Macgarth pointed out that negotiators must ensure that the pursuit of peace does not lead to Russia escaping prosecution.

The European commissioner's comments convey a characteristic unease in European capitals that the original U.S. peace plan included a promise of "full amnesty for acts committed during the war" as well as Russia's return to the global economy, Politico noted.

"I don't think history will approve of any attempt to erase the traces of Russian crimes in Ukraine," McGrath said.

The European commissioner added: "They must be held accountable for these crimes and that is the approach that the European Union will take in all of these discussions."
