St. Elizabeth Monastery supports the Russian regime.
The Church of Sweden recommends against accepting nuns from the Belarusian St. Elizabeth Convent, writes expressen.se.
The warning comes after criticism arose because a parish in Teby near Stockholm invited the nuns to its church, which they had attended for eight years. Handmade items such as mittens and Russian matryoshka dolls were sold during the visit.
"They are indirectly supporting the Russian regime, and we don't want to contribute to that," the head of the Church of Sweden's civil preparedness department, Lisa-Gun Bernerstedt, told P4.
She estimates that between 10 and 20 parishes in the country have cooperated with the Belarusian nunnery. The Church of Sweden is now publicly calling on parishes to abandon the practice.
In its appeal, the religious institution writes that nuns from the St. Elizabeth Monastery contact parishes to sell folk crafts at Advent and Christmas fairs.
"They maintain close contact with the GRU - the Russian intelligence and security service - and are subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate under the leadership of Patriarch Kirill," the church said in a news release.
