U.S. Finds 'black Boxes' Of UPS Plane That Caught Fire On Takeoff

They have already been submitted to specialists for analysis.

Investigators have recovered the flight recorders of a UPS cargo plane that crashed near Louisville, Kentucky. At least 12 people were killed in the crash.

According to Reuters and the Associated Press.

The US Federal Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that both recorders - a flight data recorder and the crew's conversations - have been found. They have already been turned over to experts for analysis.

After being cleared for takeoff, a large fire broke out in the plane's left wing, said Todd Inman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation.

The NTSB will now try to determine what caused the fire and why the engine fell off. Investigators will likely need more than a year to answer those questions.

The plane gained enough altitude to pass the fence at the end of the runway before crashing near Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Inman said.

He said airport security video showed the left engine detaching from the wing during acceleration.

Inman said a voice recorder and cockpit data recorder were recovered, and the engine was found on the airfield. In all, the wreckage flew a long distance.

Louisville officials said the airport has already reopened, but the runway will remain closed for about 10 more days.

The UPS cargo plane crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time while departing Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport for Honolulu.
