Vilnius has called on Brussels to intervene.
Lithuanian Foreign and Transport Ministers Kiastutis Budrys and Juras Taminskas have asked the European Commission to urgently intervene in the situation with Lithuanian trucks, which have been unable to leave the territory of Belarus for several months.
In a letter sent to the European Commissioners Kaija Kallas and Apostolos Dzidzikostas, the Lithuanian side asks to prepare a unified strategy of the European Union to help European carriers, blocked in Belarus, as well as to develop measures to strengthen security at the border, where the active use of smuggled drones and balloons is recorded. This is reported by LRT with reference to the agency BNS.
Lithuania demands from the EU to achieve the full and unconditional release of all European carriers and their property, which, according to Vilnius, are held by the Belarusian side illegally.
In addition, the European Commission is urged to support the introduction of a new package of sanctions against Belarus - including against officials involved in the launch of balloons with contraband.
The situation with blocked trucks in Belarus arose after Lithuania closed the border with Belarus due to the mass launch of balloons with smuggled cigarettes, which caused disruptions in the work of Vilnius airport. In response, Belarusian authorities blocked the exit of Lithuanian trucks.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė reported that about 280 trucks remained in Belarus, but the Linava association says the number of Lithuanian vehicles could be as high as four thousand, of which 1,25 thousand are tractor-trailers. The companies have already received warnings from the Belarusian authorities that the vehicles could be confiscated after four months of parking.
