The Polish Air Force has put its air defense systems on high alert due to four MiG-31s performing a routine flight near Russia's western borders. According to Bild, not only the Polish military, but also the Bundeswehr units stationed in the country reacted to the situation. In particular, two German Patriot systems were put on maximum alert.
The planes later turned around without leaving Russian airspace, which was confirmed by NATO sources and a representative of the German Air Force.
The situation arose amid tensions in the region - in September, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the alliance was ready to shoot down Russian planes in case of violation of the bloc's airspace. The statement came after Estonia's airspace was violated by three MiG-31 interceptors near the island of Vaindlo. Moscow denied the claims at the time.
